We had the chance to talk to Maru and his owner to get a sneak peek into Maru’s life. Maru was only four months old and weighed over 5 lbs (2.4kg) when he first entered his home. He has always been a chubby cat, and even now, he weighs 5.5kg or 12.1lbs. Interestingly, Maru’s name means “round” in Japanese, but his owner Mugumogu did not name him because of his rotund shape. The name was decided before Maru arrived, and it is short and easy for him to understand. Maru’s love for boxes began when he was a little kitten. He would play with boxes and use them as his bed. Mischievous Maru loves to command attention and often acts silly to get people to notice him. Moreover, he enjoys playing with water and will join his owner in the bathroom to swat water with his paws. In November 2007, Maru started his blog to share his stories with the world, and in July 2008, he uploaded his first YouTube video. His videos soon became viral, and his popularity skyrocketed. Over 48,000 people subscribed to Maru’s YouTube channel, and his videos have over 46 million views from cat lovers and Maru’s fans worldwide. Amy: How did you come to live with your family? Maru: I was only four months old when I moved here in September 2007. I don’t remember how I got here, but they tell me that my human fell in love with me at first sight. Amy: What kind of food do you like? Maru: I usually eat both dry and wet food. My favorite foods are chicken and tuna. Amy: What do you do every day? Maru: Sleep, eat, and play. My human always tells me that I live a life that everyone envies. Amy: What’s your favorite toy? Maru: I love playing with feather wands or whatever my human attaches to the wand. I also enjoy playing hide and seek with my human and then chasing them around.
Amy asks Maru about his fame on YouTube, but Maru doesn’t really understand how famous he is. He spends most of his time sleeping, eating, and playing, and his human tells him that everyone loves him. Maru has never played with other cats, but he does love going into boxes – he gets excited every time he sees one! Aside from boxes, Maru enjoys hanging out on top of a cat tree, by the window, and in the bathroom.
Amy asked Maru if he prefers big or small boxes. Maru replied that when he naps, he likes small boxes because they fit him snugly, but when he plays, he prefers a huge one. Amy then asked if Maru often plays in the backyard and how he likes it. Maru said that with the weather getting warmer, he gets to play outside more often. He enjoys sunbathing, sniffing the air, and looking for bugs, but gets scared when birds fly over him. Lastly, Amy asked Maru what he would like to say to his fans from around the world. Maru replied with a simple greeting and gratitude for their love. It was mentioned that Maru is turning three years old on May 24th and even has his own book published, which is available in many countries.
